From Nara to Indiana

The Japan-America Society of Indiana invites you to join a unique online cultural experience live-streamed from Shonenji Temple in Kashihara City, Nara Prefecture. During the program, which has been created specifically for our Hoosier audience, you will have special access to the grounds of the temple located in Imai-cho, a historic neighborhood in Kashihara City. Organized in partnership with LUKES Japan and the State of Indiana, the live experience will introduce viewers to cultural and historical aspects of both Shonenji Temple and Imai-cho.

Shonenji Temple & Imai-cho

Shonenji Temple was built sometime around 1530 AD during the Tenmon Era of the Muromachi Period. Imai-cho, the neighborhood surrounding the temple, is part of Kashihara City. The Kashihara Palace is believed to have been the place where Emperor Jimmu, the legendary first emperor of Japan, ascended the throne. Shonenji Temple sits in the middle of this ancient and important Japanese city.
