The Japan-America Society of Indiana will present the "Japan Update Conference 2016" on Thursday, February 18th, at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Indianapolis. The annual event is designed to inform our audience on key developments in Japan and the Japan-U.S. relationship, as well as to highlight Japanese investment in Indiana.
We're pleased that the 2016 conference will offer one of the first occasions of the year to congratulate Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Indiana, on its Twentieth Anniversary. Mr. Norm Bafunno, President of Toyota Indiana, will give the keynote luncheon address. The program will include video clips from the "Toyota Effect" showing Toyota's outreach in helping other organizations improve their systems through the Toyota Production System philosophy. The Honorable Toshiyuki Iwado, Consul General of Japan in Chicago, will give Opening Remarks.
Now in its fifth year, the JASI Japan Update Conference has become a signature event in the Midwest, providing a business, economic and international relations outlook for the year with discussion of developments for Japan and Indiana, as well as key issues for the Japan-U.S. relationship in Asia. Presented in cooperation with the National Association of Japan America Societies, the conference will open with speakers on Japan-U.S. global issues, featuring two internationally-recognized experts, Tohru Sasaki of JP Morgan Chase-Tokyo, and Sheila Smith of the Council for Foreign Relations-Washington D.C., speaking on Japan's economy and security issues in the Pacific. Ichiro Soné, Chief Executive Director of the Japan External Trade Organization, Chicago, will provide an update on the five-year recovery and resurgence of the Tohoku region of Japan.
The conference will feature several informative sessions. "Building Community Relationships with Japan" will include local economic development officials who have extensive experience in building relationships with Japan, sharing recommendations and best practices for developing and sustaining relationships at the grassroots level. "New Partners in Manufacturing" will feature a panel of Japanese executives whose companies have made recent investments and renewed commitments to Indiana resulting in new jobs and cultural connections for Indiana communities.
